You may have heard that Home Care Packages (HCP) are being replaced with a new program called Support at Home (SAH). But what does this really mean for you or your loved one? If you’re feeling a little confused, you’re not alone. Let’s break it down together.
The shift to Support at Home comes in response to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, which highlighted the need for a more flexible, person-centred, and easy-to-navigate system. The goal is simple: a program that works better for older Australians and their families.
Support at Home isn’t just a name change—it’s a full redesign of government-funded home care services. Here are the key things to know:
A streamlined system – SAH will combine multiple existing programs into one. It will replace:
A single assessment pathway – making it easier to access services without repeating the same information multiple times.
Personalised care plans – tailored to individual needs, strengths, and goals.
Greater focus on independence – with supports designed to help people stay at home, connected, and in control for as long as possible.
One of the biggest changes is the introduction of eight funding levels (instead of the current four). This means more flexibility to match support with individual needs.
Here are the new annual funding levels:
| Classification | Quarterly Budget | Annual Amount |
| 1 | $2,674.18 | $10,696.72 |
| 2 | $3,995.42 | $15,981.68 |
| 3 | $5,479.94 | $21,919.77 |
| 4 | $7,386.33 | $29,545.33 |
| 5 | $9,883.76 | $39,535.04 |
| 6 | $11,989.35 | $47,957.41 |
| 7 | $14,530.53 | $58,122.13 |
| 8 | $19,427.25 | $77,709.00 |

Alongside the new classifications, SAH introduces targeted pathways for short-term support:
While the transition won’t happen overnight, it’s important to understand how these changes could impact your future care. Planning ahead means fewer surprises and a smoother experience.
And remember our golden rule when applying for aged care services:
Always consider what you can manage on your very worst day—not your best.
That’s the best way to ensure you get the right level of support.
Thanks – its all a learning curve !!
